July 18, 2012 – Those who have been injured while taking the birth control drugs Yaz or Yasmin may have the right to a substantial recovery for their losses as the maker of the drug, Bayer, is currently settling claims.

However, a court official in charge of monitoring the settlements predicts they may be finished within a year.

Anyone who suffered a blood clot, DVT, stroke or Pulmonary Embolism after taking Yaz or Yasmin should contact the Yaz Resource Center to speak with a lawyer about their legal options as soon as possible.

The British Medical Journal published a study last October linking the chemicals in Yaz to blood clots. The FDA released its own study two days later which also found Yaz and similar drugs could increase the risk of blood clots, DVT and pulmonary embolism by as much as 74%.

In May, the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices released a study finding Yaz and Yasmin had the second-most number of injury and side effect reports to the FDA in 2011. Together, they resulted in 8,354 complaints.

Since more than 10,000 patients have filed a Yaz lawsuit, a special federal Multi-District Litigation court was created in Illinois to handle the litigation. In April, Bloomberg News reported that Bayer had begun settling Yaz lawsuits for more than $200,000 per case.

Now, the special master appointed by the court to oversee settlement negotiations, Stephen Saltzburg, reports that as many as 1,500 Yaz settlements have been reached and negotiations could be concluded within a year.

Anyone affected by blood clots, stroke, DVT or pulmonary embolism after taking Yaz should learn their legal rights as soon as possible.

The Yaz Resource Center cautions that only certain lawyers may be able to help you obtain a Yaz settlement. Victims will also be required to submit proper medical records and paperwork. The Resource Center only recommends lawyers and law firms who have already settled Yaz lawsuits.
